New Vacuum Cleaner

So recently our vacuum died on us. Anyone have a good recommendation? We have stairs, and I used to vacuum them with a hand held corded dirt devil - but that hasn't happened in a long time since I really don't feel like vacuuming on my hands and knees. A friend of mine said her Dyson collects dust somewhere inside - that the occasional dust cloud will erupt despite efforts to have it serviced & throughly cleaned out.

I heard the Dyson is very heavy!!

I'd read the Consumer Reports online.

I like my Miele. The bags are rather small, but it is very efficient. Also, it is pretty light weight wise. You can't go wrong with Miele. You don't want to go cheap and have to buy another in a few years!

My parents had an Orek. Small, but not much power. It took twice as long to vacuum, and still left a lot of dog hair and dust.

Go for the Dyson if you want something that really does an awesome job cleaning!! I love mine! The Dyson is bagless but is easy to clean. Because it's bagless, it has never lost any suction power.
I've had numerous vacum cleaners over the years and the Dyson is far superior to all others. The only downfall is that it is a little heavier to push on carpets than my self propelled Kirby but well worth the extra effort. I have 2 kids and 3 dogs so it take a lot of abuse. I bought it 3 years ago when we moved into a 2 story house. My thoughts at that time were to use the Kirby (which I used to think was the best) upstairs and the Dyson downstairs.... however; the poor Kirby hasn't been out of the closet yet!

We got ours from Sears less than 6 months ago. I followed around a woman with a Consumer Reports book and bought what the book recommended -- Kenmore Progressive (big, purple, and bagless). It's been great so far!
